How to get a Slice of the Thanksgiving Mobile Pie

How to get a Slice of the Thanksgiving Mobile Pie

It’s that time of year again! The smell of turkey is in the air and shoppers are on the hunt for the best Black Friday bargains. The biggest shopping day of the year is coming. Do you want a slice of the pie?

Black Friday is an incredible opportunity for mobile game developers to get in on the shopping frenzy. Here are 5 reasons why your game should have an American Thanksgiving Day Sale:

1) Mobile Shopping is Growing:

According to Adobe News, 31% of all Thanksgiving shopping is done on a mobile device. This year, even more people will be hunting for Black Friday deals on their phones and tablets. While they’re in the mood to spend, send them a push notification to let them know you have a sale going on and capitalize on this mobile shopping behaviour!

2)  App Store Trends

Every year, the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store explode around American Thanksgiving and Christmas for several reasons:

Electronics are the biggest sellers during Black Friday. With thousands of people getting new phones and tablets you can imagine the increase in downloads across the app stores. As you can see from the graph, some of Magmic’s more popular titles got nearly 4 times the downloads during Thanksgiving weekend.

Gift cards are another huge factor. If you look at Apple’s Black Friday deals, nearly everything comes with a free iTunes gift card. A good portion of these gift cards will be used to purchase apps and in-app purchases.

Spending habits are the final piece to the puzzle. Everyone is looking for great Black Friday deals including sales in the App Store.

3) Familiarity

Shoppers will pay more attention to your message if they see something they find familiar. They might not recognize your brand, but they will definitely recognize a major holiday like Thanksgiving. Our Halloween themed ads received upwards of 3 times more clicks than our non-themed ads.

4) Ad Fatigue

Shoppers will pay more attention to your message if they see something they find familiar. They might not be familiar with your brand but they are familiar with major holidays. Our Halloween themed ads received upwards of 3 times more clicks than our non-themed ads.

5) Urgency

In my past article 5 Tips for Improving Mobile Ad interstitials, I outline how creating creating urgency with taglines like “Limited Time Only” can contribute to higher conversion rates. Players know that a Thanksgiving Sale isn’t going to be available passed the holiday thus giving them a sense of urgency to act on the promotion.

Millions of people in North America participate in the Black Friday craze. You’d have to be a turkey to let your game miss out on the fun.
